Habitat Build

Monday Spencer and Thomas got to help build a house with Habitat for Humanity. They worked all day and went straight to rehearsal, getting home at 10pm. It was a great experience and I’m so happy they got to do it.

Geography Dinners

We started our first week of school! It was a soft start, meaning we didn’t do math or spelling or science. But we did do geography. This year the kids have all voted to do geography for our main subject. Every day we’ll learn about a new country or two or ten. 🙂 We’ll also learn about a composer from that country and listen to their music. Additionally, we’ll learn about an artist, study their art, and try it ourselves. For language arts they’ll read both non-fiction and fiction books about the country and I will read out loud from a chapter book set in that country. Studying the history of the country counts for history and studying natural disasters, land formations, terrain, and climate counts as science. We’re encompassing a lot of subjects into geography! Pretty much everything except math, which they’ll do on their own.

Monday we studied the whole world–facts and such–and ate the most popular food from each continent: hamburgers, tacos, spaghetti, rice, and croissant. Guess where they’re all from? Then we had bananas and tomatoes as the most popular fruits around the world. Tuesday we studied the top facts of Europe. Then we ate the post popular food in Europe: pizza, arancini, grapes, broccoli (we ate it all before the picture) and I added some carrots for an extra veggie. Fun first 2 days of school!

Cardboard Boats

Wednesday we went to a church activity where we got to try riding in cardboard boats the young men have spent 3 years building with lots of cardboard and duct tape. Some immediately sank and others did well. First the young men raced them. Then they let anyone who wanted to, to take a ride in them. It was a lot of fun! Afterwards, the boys played in a pickup wiffle ball game. I enjoyed watching them as well as staring at the beautiful dark clouds over the deep green trees. I love North Carolina summer evenings. So gorgeous.

Olympic Party

Lori came up on Friday just in time to watch the opening ceremonies with us. She requested American foods like grilled cheese, hot dogs, and hamburgers. So that’s what we had! Plus some good American sides. It was a lot of fun.

Into The Woods

Thomas was Rapuzel’s Prince in “Into the Woods” play. He did fantastic! He always does! It’s so fun watching him act on stage and listen to him sing. He’s going places! We weren’t allowed to record it or else I’d post it here. But here are two pictures.

Miscellaneous Photos

I finish this post with miscellaneous photos I took throughout the week. There’s Tilly trying to hold and play Kaitlyn’s big guitar and telling me she wants her own. 🙂 Then there’s the girls playing with ducks in the pouring rain. Carving names and nicknames in pumpkins and gourds. Garden produce. And our two little guinea fowl perched on Makenna’s fingers.
