Monday: Julianne’s birthday
Our sweet stillborn baby, Julianne, would have been Sweet 16 today! We used to make stromboli and take it to the park and eat it and then go to the cemetery to visit her grave. That was when we lived in Greenville, NC. Now some years we make it and some we don’t, depending on how busy we are and if a child asks for it. This year we didn’t have anything going on and I was missing Julianne because she’d be getting her license. After having 2 drivers last semester and none this semester, it sure would be great to have Julianne!
So we made stromboli and had a little party for her eating it and looking at her box of special things. Then we roasted marshmallows and went to bed. It was a fun family afternoon.

Here is the last time we visited Julianne’s grave which is about 3.5 hours away. I took all 10 kids so it’s actually the only picture I have of all 11 children.
Studying Gutzon Borglum and Mount Rushmore
Tuesday we studied South Dakota, Gutzon Borglum, and Mount Rushmore. We used air dry clay to carve our own monuments. Makenna’s was my favorite: a grizzly bear sitting on a stump. It was a fun project. And afterward we did some square dancing, which we found out North Dakota is square dance capital. Watch the vlog to see!
Makenna is a Teenager!
Friday was Makenna’s 13th birthday. She Trix for breakfast, cranberry steel cut oats for lunch and grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner. She played “Duck of the Day” with her siblings. She baked and decorated a dragon paradise cake. The kids played games and did school. She talked to her cousin. She had the whole day planned out and had a great day!
Saturday
We hauled dead wood and branches from the woods. And had fun trying to knock over small dead trees. The boys spent the afternoon making a fort in their bedroom. The girls crocheted and listened to audio books. Tilly wrote a book for Makenna’s late birthday present.
