Feeding a large family is hard in these expensive times. But it can be done! Read on to see how I Feed my family for under $800 a month!
At the time of this writing I have 6 kids at home. The others come home for Christmas and during the summer. But our usual budget for the 7 of us is $200 a week max. I usually spend $150 and then every other month or so I’ll go to Sam’s Club when I’m in that town 2 hours away and spend about $400 and count it as both the weekly groceries plus extra to stock up on staples for a couple of months. About twice a year I will go to Whole Foods or a health food store and get a few specialty items like raw cheese.
Here’s what I get at each store to feed my family healthily for under $800 a month
Walmart/Local Grocery Store Weekly Groceries ~$150
- 15-20 bananas
- 3 heads of lettuce
- tomatoes
- 1-2 celery stalks
- 2 bags of apples
- 3 avocado
- Other fruits and veggies in season (peaches, nectarines, cherries,
- 3 pack organic grass-fed ground beef
- 3 whole milk
- 1 organic Greek plain yogurt
- 3-5 staples I am out of such as canned veggies, baking supplies, condiments, etc.
Every 2-3 weeks I get the above plus add:
- Organic chicken
- 4 cream cheese blocks
- popcorn
- other meat like uncured bacon or sausage or lunch meat
- organic granola
- 4 4-packs of Noosa Vanilla yogurt for treats
- frozen fruit or veggies
- tortillas
Sam’s Club 4-5 times a year ~$400
- canned chicken
- salsa
- organic red quinoa tortilla chips
- bread
- shredded and sliced cheese
- fruits and veggies for the next 2 weeks (and skip my weekly shopping trip)
- regular butter and organic butter
- plain Greek yogurt
- 9 lbs of organic grass-fed ground beef
- organic chicken broth
- baking supplies and spices
Whole Foods 1-2 times a year ~$200+ depending on my budget
- organic sprouted oats
- organic black beans
- other types of beans they have in stock
- organic popcorn kernels
- 6 blocks of raw cheese
- kefir
- sprouted corn tortillas
Summary
So I spend $150 a week on normal weeks getting groceries for my family. That’s usually $600-700 a month. Then I occasionally go to Sam’s Club or Whole Foods when I’m in that city, usually picking up my college kids from the airport. I can easily spend $400 there so all together that averages less than $800 a month. In the summer you’d think I’d spend more because I have more kids at home but I offset the cost by cooking as many foods as I can with food we grow ourselves. Sometimes I have to be creative, but I can usually do it!
