April: Easter and Processing Chickens

6 kids eating Easter dinner outside

For awhile my blog storage was full so I got behind on posting our weekly Happenins. I freed up a tiny bit of storage, but I still can’t post a lot until I have the money to pay for more storage. So here is a post summarizing some fun April Happenins to save me time so I can get caught up quicker. This is the first part of April.

Easter Concert

The 6 kids at home right now all sang in a beautiful Easter concert. I loved watching it and listening to the beautiful music. The other picture I took watching the 6 kids play “Wise and Otherwise” together. I love how they can play games together for hours.

Easter Sunday

We had a beautiful Easter sunrise. The kids lined up and then went downstairs to gather candy the Easter bunny left all over the living room.

Most of the day we watched General Conference and one session Tilly and I watched outside on my Chromebook while we sketched. It rained in the morning, but then turned into a beautiful day! We ate our Easter Feast outside with ham, potatoes, asparagus, mango and apples.

After dinner when Sam and Andy were clearing the table and putting away the tablecloth, they ended up tossing it back and forth to each other and got it stuck in the dogwood. It was so funny. I loved the colorful scene, that’s why I took so many pictures of Samuel climbing the tree to rescue it as the sun was going down.

Processing Our First Chickens!

One of our hens, Rafiki, hatched 15 eggs last October and 8 were roosters. Now that they are trying to mate all our poor hens and also crow so much that there is never a quiet moment, we decided to process them. We already have 5 other roosters and that’s enough.

So we took these roosters to our friend’s house who also had some chickens to slaughter. She also had the perfect setup to process the chickens quickly and efficiently. It’s our first time participating and we had a great time. Tilly got a chicken out of the cage, Thomas stuck it in the cone and held it’s feet. Kaitlyn slit its throat with precision and swiftness. Thomas or Willow dunked it in hot water. Willow put it in the feather plucker. Andy cut off the legs. I gutted the insides and washed them. Makenna cut off the meat into big breast, thigh and leg portions. Another friend sealed them with the food saver. You can see more with the YouTube video! Great to come home with our own meat we raised ourselves!
