Sunday we woke up to 9 degrees and no water. We assumed the pipes had frozen even though we have a pipe heater. So it made sense but didn’t make sense. It had been weeks of freezing weather, yet we’ve never had frozen pipes before with our pipe heater. We went without water all week and finally found the problem on Friday!
- Tilly and one of her snowmen
- The snow was so thick in some places
- Wood ash melting the ice so that we can get out
- Some snow drifts were really deep! Samuel measured some 10-1
- On the south side of the house, the snow almost all blew away in the big winds we got.
Tuesday Thomas got the van out of the driveway and left it at the end of the road. Wednesday the 3 girls and I packed the John Deere poly cart with laundry, library books, and trash to finally take to town. A friend let us use her house to shower and do laundry. We returned books and got new ones at the library’s limited open hours. We also went to Makenna’s orthodontist appointment, did the grocery shopping, and sang at the nursing home. It felt so good to get all our errands done after being home for exactly 2 weeks.
Thursday: More Snow!
We woke up Thursday morning to another 1/2″ of snow! Beautiful and crazy at the same time. We get more rain than snow in the winter so it’s been fun to get so many snowstorms in 2 weeks. It snowed another 1/2″ on Friday so that makes 4 snow/ice storms in 12 days!
Every afternoon Tilly and I went for a walk. We would check the mail, but there was never any mail for 19 days! Sometimes during this 2 week ice/snow event we would snow tube, slide around, skate, etc. This particular night we saw how much snow covered the ash that we had spread on the road to melt the ice. (couldn’t see any ash anywhere!) We also went around the yard looking at all the different animal footprints: chickens, our turkey, wild turkey, raccoon, fox, rabbit, squirrel and deer. It was a fun and relaxing walk with my baby girl.
New Well Pump
After 6 days of no water, the plumbers decided to pull the old pump up, put a new one on, and see if that was the problem. It was! We finally got water again! Watch the video to hear the kids cheering inside the window the moment the breaker was flipped and water started coming out the faucet.
Of course, as soon as they pulled the pump up, it started snowing heavily. It was beautiful, but also cold, trying to put the new pump on and putting it back down in the 100′ well. Hear the whole story on the vlog and the miracles video!
Makenna Turns 14!
Makenna’s birthday fell on a Saturday this year and we had no plans as the town was still shut down and activities canceled. Makenna had plans to play outside but there was still ice everywhere and a high of 28 with a wind-chill of 21, so those plans went out the window. Instead we mostly hung out, watched some Olympics, did some karaoke, made lime delight, and facetimed family.
