We had a great week! Check it out!
Singing at a Care Facility.
A friend from church got us hooked up with another church that will pay us to sing at a care facility. They were looking for people to come and I’m always looking for ways to provide for my family, so it felt like such a blessing. I hate to even accept money for something like this, but this is the situation I’m in right now so I gratefully accepted. The lady in charge is the sweetest ever. There was a sign saying no phones so I only got two pictures but we sang some all together with Kait at the piano, the boys sang some, the girls sang some, etc. Kaitlyn later told me one of her New Year’s goals is to sing at a nursing home so she was thrilled to accomplish that.
Strawberry Patch
I loved going to the strawberry patch near our house in Greenville, NC with my older kids. These ones hardly remember it so I’m thrilled one opened up by our house this year. Our own strawberries have produced very little.
Homemade Popsicles
The kids got a Popsicle book at the bookmobile the other week and continue to make new popsicle every few days. These ones were lemon and are the favorite so far. I love watching them thumb through the pages of the book and decide together which one to make and then all work together to squeeze a bunch of lemons or whatever they need to do.
Broody Ducks
We have two broody ducks sitting on one nest of 7 duck eggs. They either take turns getting off the nest and running around the yard, or they both sit on it at the same time. We’re so excited because none of our fowl have had their own babies before, we’ve had to incubate them. We’re hoping they stay on it the entire month!
Here’s the video of day #1 when only 1 duck was sitting on it. I’ll do an update in a week or two.
While playing outside on Friday, Kaitlyn checked on the ducks on their nest and found a rat snake sitting on it instead! Luckily it hadn’t eaten any eggs yet. We all worked together to chase it out of the coop and get it into the yard where Kaitlyn killed it with my maul. She was amazing!
Campfire
After reading and playing outside all day we had a campfire to burn a bunch of brush. When the fire died down we made foil dinners in the coals. They were delicious! The weather was perfect and it was such a beautiful, fun evening.
Mommy Date Hike With Tilly
Friday I took Tilly on a Mommy date hike. She said it was on her New Year’s goals and she wanted to accomplish something like Kaitlyn did. We went to Cumberland Gap, one of my favorite hikes because of how beautiful it is. We’re also the only ones there when we go. We had a fantastic time and savored every minute of it. Tilly is a little doll and I’m sad she’s growing up so fast. I love having little kids and will miss it when I don’t anymore.
We had to cross the creek 13 times so there was a lot of fancy footwork we had to do to get across without getting wet. It’s a fun 3 mile loop trail, straight down to the creek and then back up the other side of the knob. Full of rhododendrons and beautiful trees. We ate lunch by the creek and when we got back to the top we sat and sketched for a bit, not wanting to go home.
Planting the Pumpkin Patch
I’ve been waiting to get or borrow a tiller for our pumpkin patch, but realized after all the rain we were getting, I just needed to plant today. So when it turned to a drizzle we all ran out and started digging rows. We got 7 packages of seeds in the ground before it started to pour and rained all night. Hopefully they grow well!

What is a rat snake? Do duck eggs taste the same as chicken eggs?
A rat snake is a big black snake that eats mice and rats. And also chicken eggs. Yes, duck eggs taste the same to me. I don’t notice any difference. They are bigger, so people say they are nutritionally better–have more protein and vitamins. But they’re bigger, so they would have more protein. In any case, all eggs are so good for you.
