Blessings From the Piano

Five siblings gather around the piano to sing Christmas carols.

How learning the piano has blessed our family, a pictorial post.

The other day I put “piano” into the search bar in my google photos and a whole slew of them came up. I can’t remember now what I was looking for but seeing all the good times we’ve had with our piano overwhelmed me with gratitude for keeping that piano I didn’t want. I also said a silent gratitude prayer to my Heavenly Father for endowing my children with musical talents and allowing them to bless our family. I wanted to share a few of these moments with you.

Baby girl falls asleep in her brothers arms as he plays the piano.
Perfect place to plop a tired, cranky baby and let the piano and big brother do their magic.

When I walk past the front room on a Sunday and see my handsome 15 year-old still dressed up from church playing beautiful Christmas music.
16 year-old daughter plays the piano after church.
Later that same day I hear more beautiful Christmas music and look around the corner from the kitchen to see who’s playing. I can’t take my eyes off my beautiful 16 year-old, a senior who is awaiting notification from colleges, and then grab my camera and take a picture to remember this moment, knowing all too soon she will be away at school
Teenage boy holds 3 kids on his lap while he plays the piano
When I need a babysitter for the 3 youngest, I know who to ask! Even though he’s playing a fancy Rachmaninoff solo piece, he can still hold 3 kids on his lap. 🙂
In February 2019 a piano teacher asked Spencer to come play for her recital so her little 4-8 year old students will be inspired. OK, so maybe this mostly blessed the teacher and students, but I was invited to come with my kids and I felt blessed to watch as it was the first time ever he dressed up and performed. At this time I was stressed out with so many little napping babies I was constantly asking him to stop playing. Having someone else notice his talent and recognize him publicly for it did a lot of good both for Spencer and for myself. I felt ashamed I’d been hushing him for years and determined to change that and start welcoming his enthusiastic and loud playing.
In December 2019 another piano teacher asked Spencer to play a prelude duet with her for her little piano recital. Again, he was there to bless others with his talent but I came and watched and was blown away. This was just sight-read on the spot, no practicing at all. Since we don’t take lessons we haven’t performed in recitals so it was a treat to be included in two and reminded me not to take his talent for granted.

When we go to someone else’s house, the thing we’re most excited about is when we see a grand piano!
Teenage boy tunes an old piano.
Spencer, with his perfect pitch, has learned to tune pianos and when we went to my parents’ house on vacation he tuned their piano right away.
I come in from a walk to find a dance party going on. Too bad I didn’t record the whole song. I love it when my teens play duets together and all the other kids drop what they’re doing and start dancing.

We’re thrilled when we get to meet people like The Piano Guys.
18 year old girl plays the organ at church while 2 brothers watch her.
After settling ourselves in our bench at church and listening to the prelude music I suddenly realize the little boys are missing. I ask the other kids and someone points to them up on the stand, hanging out by Kylie, my oldest, playing the organ prelude music. It melted my heart. I sent a child up to take a picture to help me remember the moment. It’s not a great picture but when I see it it reminds me of the special feelings I felt that day. I’m so blessed to have children who can play the organ to bless the lives of the hundreds of people who come to church each Sunday. They’re also an example to my little ones who wish they could play the organ too.

If you’re thinking of getting a piano, do it! Our first piano was a digital piano I found cheap on craigslist and got with tax refund money in 2008. Years later someone gave us their piano and I didn’t want it b/c it couldn’t be turned down during naps like the digital piano could but I’m glad we accepted. As you can see, it’s been a blessing to us. My kids are all self taught and yours can be too. Get a piano and see the blessings that come from it.
